The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that has been going since the 1960s. Its intention has always been one of celebration of Caribbean culture and visibility of its community in and around London. While the carnival was originally for the local community, today, over 2 million people come from near and far to join the street party, take in the vibrant entertainment and enjoy festival atmosphere. This year was especially special after the break and restrictions enforced due to COVID.
Jet was lucky enough to get to the event this August bank holiday and was struck by how much the carnival is still focused on and driven by the local community. While taking in the sights and sounds of the street party, Jet focused her smartphone camera on the people rather than the carnival itself and came back with some fantastic shots to share.
The entrepreneurial spirit was everywhere, from The Best F***ing Cupcakes to renting out toilets!
The street party was all around, as were the smiling faces.
Away from the main streets there was a more chilled atmosphere and time to rest.
The array of colours and amazing costumes were a feast for the eyes… and the camera lens!
People set up shop on their door step to cook the most amazing tasting food. Everyone got involved!
