What an amazing week it has been for Mary as she graduated with a Distinction for her Master of Arts in Photography! Huge congratulations, Mary!
Making memories through photography
Mary’s achievement made me think back again to the importance all types of photography play in our lives. I always say that there are two types of image - the photo and the snap - and both are equally important for keeping memories.
A photo is more formal picture. It’s not necessarily professionally taken, but it has clear intent and is taken with production in mind, perhaps for a photo frame or canvass. On the other side, there is a snap. This is a casual style of image, perhaps taken on the fly as something that caught your eye or as an experiment. It might stay on your phone or in the cloud and you might revisit later while scrolling back through your pictures.
Both of these types of photo taking play an important role for us in marking key moments and times we enjoyed. And they are a way of connecting, sharing and remembering socially too.
Graduation day is a perfect example of this as we line up for our ‘official’ photo in gown and mortar board, but we also take an abundance of pictures on our phone - of our loved ones, our cohort and professors and the celebratory atmosphere all around - to publish on social, to send to those who couldn’t be there and to keep just for us.
Share your graduation day snaps!
