Julie recently returned to her childhood home, nestled between the beautiful harbour towns of Bude and Boscastle in North Cornwall, where she runs her smartphone safaris. The Cornish landscape provides endless inspiration for Julie’s artistic work, of which photography has always been at the foundation. This naturally evolved into smartphone photography because of its ease of use, portability and great quality, and she now takes great pleasure in sharing these skills in her local photography sessions.
We caught up with Julie to learn more about her approach to smartphone photography.
What first interested you about smartphone photography?
I love the accessibility of a phone camera because I always have it on me. I used to have a big camera with a couple of different lenses, but carrying it around was a pain. It got to the point where I only took it out for special occasions or on holidays, and I missed so many great photo opportunities every day because I'd left my camera at home!
What phone do you use and what are your favourite features?
I use an iPhone 12. The portrait, live & burst modes are my essential go-to's.
What’s your favourite location for photography?
It may not surprise you in North Cornwall, but the beach! preferably on a sunny day with a beautiful sunset.
Could you share an image that you love and tell us about it?
I love using reflections and having a focus in the foreground to create interest. Leading your eye up and throughout the image is particularly satisfying to me. Using the live feature, or burst mode, I can capture the movement of a crest of a wave and select the most interesting shot from that particular moment.
